Center for Adaptive Optics Professional Development Program (CfAO PDP)

The focus of the PDP is on teaching science and engineering much as they are done in practice, in other words teaching science as a process of inquiry, and engineering as a process of design. The practical application is on teaching laboratory courses, but participants in the PDP come away with many new teaching tools and experience that can be applied broadly to teaching. The PDP has emphasizes teaching for diversity and equity, and how scientists and engineers can apply the science of learning to their own teaching.

Participation in the PDP begins with a 1-day workshop in the Fall Quarter, which opens the application period. Applicants selected for full participation in the PDP attend a 4-day teaching workshop held in the Spring Quarter. Participants work on a design team during and after the workshop, continue developing skills through mini-workshops and expert consultation, and put their new teaching skills into practice. The practical teaching experience usually takes place in “teaching labs” — CfAO-affiliated educational programs or courses.

PDP Director: Lisa Hunter

PDP has an annual participation cycle that begins in Oct-Nov
