On the UCSC campus, Cal Teach provides services for prospective secondary math and science teachers through its Resource Center in Thimann Labs on Science Hill. Resource Center staff members oversee the internship program and provide academic and career advising and information on financial support for future math and science teachers. The Resource Center also hosts and provides support for students to attend teacher professional development events and provides exam preparation assistance and reimbursement for teacher’s exam fees (the CBEST and CSET). The most outstanding UCSC Cal Teach graduates may receive a large scholarship to attend UCSC’s MA/teaching credential program. The heart of the Cal Teach program for undergraduates is a sequence of three middle and high school internships in science or math classrooms: CaT1, CaT2, and CaT3, each accompanied by an academic seminar.
To be eligible for an internship, students must be planning to complete a STEM major (including environmental studies) and be currently enrolled at either UCSC or a community college. Interns spend 4-5 hours per week in a middle or high school classroom and complete an online log of their experiences in addition to the seminar course work. Incoming transfer students may begin their Cal Teach internships at UCSC, or they may continue where they have left off in their community college program.
